A common question about hybrids is how much fuel will they save? Natural Resources Canada Energuide numbers for every vehicle sold in Canada are based on a test procedure that measures fuel performance using a so-called “typical” drive cycle.  In reality, each consumer has a unique drive cycle of stop/go, urban/highway, and winter/summer conditions that determines a specific vehicle’s fuel performance and how close it will "match" the Energuide ratings.  These ratings are in L/100 km travelled.

In the US Federal law requires that manufacturers selling vehicles must meet a sales weighted CAFÉ Standard (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency).  All vehicles sold are rated on the basis of MPG (Miles per Gallon) using the same test procedure as in Canada.

The Hybrid Experience Report takes actual measured data from many different hybrid vehicle operators and compares this data to published ratings for these vehicles. The market place for hybrids is rapidly changing. While there is extensive historical data available for a few models many others have just entered the marketplace and many more will be doing so over the next few years.
