Hybrid electric vehicles (hybrids) are a technology that combines the internal combustion engine of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle.

There has been a rapid consumer acceptance of hybrids with most major manufacturers now expanding their hybrid product lines. The technology is no longer restricted to cars but is now available in SUV's, heavy trucks, buses, and off road vehicles.

Different manufacturers are using different approaches and the technology platforms are widening.  These range from plug-in hybrids, to diesel/electric hybrids operating on biodiesel, to hydrogen fuel cell based hybrids operating a gasoline engine on E85 ethanol blends. As well, large trucks are also now entering the market with hybrid systems.
